The following five pages of photographs were taken at the last several large peace actions in San Francisco. The first three actions of substantial size were those of September 11, 2002 in Justin Herman Plaza (about 3,000 people), October 6, 2002 at Union Square (about 6,000 people), and the march of October 26, 2002 (about 60,000 people) which began at the head of Market Street and ended with speakers and a rally at the Civic Center. Pages four and five show the January 18, 2003 march and rally, where 150,000+ people demonstrated in conjunction with the birthday-holiday of Martin Luther King—beloved peace and justice activist of the highest and most profound order. The prints on these five pages range from straight color to abstract color to black and white—and are meant to reflect and convey the creative energy rising from the hearts and minds of those who want more than endless selfish warfare and destructive exploitation.

At this time the global movement for peace and justice is growing rapidly and vibrantly in response to the evolutionary crisis we face as a species. The US Space Shuttle Columbia has just blown up over Palestine, Texas, killing all six Americans and an Israeli fighter pilot. We have nuclear power and nuclear weapons spreading throughout the globe and into our space program. There is extreme turbulence and stress, and uncertainty in our transformative moment, as we attempt to shed old fears and artificial interpretations of "friend" and "enemy"—and to respond to the interconnected nature of all Life.

We are now called to speak up from the inner heart of our common humanity and to do all in our power to create an Axis of Empathy that transcends the limitations of culture and the current state of power politics. Another world is possible—but we are definitely in a cosmically critical moment—a tipping point that asks for us to serve from our highest and deepest energies. Every thought, word, and action—positive or negative—makes a difference and effects the outcome for Life as we know it.
